The Rise and Fall of the "Faceplate" Cont.

First - Warranty Problems.  Many of the aftermarket faceplates were not the same quality as the original ones.  As a result, they did not fit as they should and would damage the phone.  The consumer would then try and get the phone fixed under warranty.  This would create a headache for the manufacturers as it would be difficult to prove it was a poor quality faceplate that did the damage.

Second - Patent Infringement.  Aftermarket accessory companies jumped on the faceplate bandwagon quickly.  Even though the original manufacturers would attempt to shut down the counterfeit items, the aftermarket companies were constantly introducing new products.  This became a huge problem for the original manufacturers.

Third - Design.  By allowing custom designs to be displayed on their phones, faceplates were introduced with designs the manufacturer did not want to be associated with.  It became difficult to control what was displayed on a cell phone.

The wild popularity of the replaceable faceplate may also have been the main reason the product disappeared.
